Egg of Columbus Big Egg Hunt NY
Description

An ephemeral sculpture that engages its surroundings wherever it may be.

Recurring themes in our approach to design include shifting perspectives, the subliminal suggestion of form, and the use of color to infuse space with a richness and glow to evoke the immediacies of built form as well as architectural dream states in a dynamic conversation with the surrounding context. Just like the story of Christopher Columbus and his approach to making an egg stand on end, our solutions are astonishingly simple but executed to great effect.

Our design, Egg of Columbus - created with Keith Tsang and Jose Vilanova - was commissioned for The Big Egg Hunt New York. It is composed of plexiglass layers that converge to suggest the three-dimensional aspect of the egg form. Colored plexiglass planes chosen on the principles of Newtonian color theory create an interplay of light filtered through the lenses and reflected onto the surrounding environment to engage its outdoor context. The plexiglass material shifts from being virtually transparent to virtually solid to create an ephemeral quality to the egg that constantly changes based on one's distance, perspective and the light that surrounds it.
